Spreading cheer at Huis Sonop

Bellville police delivered much needed toiletries to patients at Huis Sonop.

A facility for the mentally ill received a much needed donation of toiletries from Bellville police last week.

Huis Sonop in Stikland has 60 patients – 26 women and 34 men – between the ages of 37 and 68 in its care.

Manager Henry Daniels said most of the patients lived out the rest of their lives at the facility. Bellville police bought the toiletries with the proceeds of their Mandela Day project which saw them raise about R1 800 from a 5km fun walk. Bellville police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Henrietta van Niekerk said they had also delivered scarves to Huis Sonop early last month.

Mr Daniels thanked the police for their support.

“Our funds are limited, and it’s always a battle when it comes to things such as toiletries especially for the women when it comes to that time of the month,” he said.

Bellville police senior admin clerk Kwanele Mfecane said the project was close to his heart. “My family was poor and could not afford to buy pads for my sister – I saw what she went through,” he said. To assist the facility, call Sanet Louw at 021 981 9850.
